As your student moves into Middle School, all of sudden you start hearing about Service Points and opportunities to earn them… But what are Service Points? Why do Middle School students need to earn Service Points? And how does this involve HVPTO?

HBCSD and Hermosa Valley School require all middle school students, grades 6-8, are to earn School Service Points. The purpose of the school service program is to provide opportunities within the school to impress upon our students the importance of giving back to others, thinking about others, serving others, and helping to make a greater whole at Hermosa Valley School. The District feels that helping others provides a sense of accomplishment in students and a feeling of belonging in their school and community.

Service points are earned by students who assist a member of the faculty or staff during school hours or while at school, and can also be earned by volunteering at certain HVPTO or HBEF events. For each 30 minutes of service that a student provides, he or she will be awarded 1 service point. Each student is required to earn a minimum of 5 service points prior to attending the Outdoor Education program and a total of 10 points must be completed before the end of the school year.

Students will be issued a School Service Points Log sheet at the beginning of the year and it is their responsibility to fill in the sheet with accurate and complete information. Students will complete the log and home room teachers will track their progress. Everyone at Hermosa Valley makes a difference and this program highlights our efforts of being a community.

With the permission of the District, HVPTO offers Middle School students the opportunity to earn School Service Points by volunteering at several of our events through the school year including Middle School Registration, Parking Lot Fundraisers, Back to School Picnic, Pancake Breakfast, and the Halloween Carnival. We appreciate all the time that our hardworking middle schoolers put into helping HVPTO run successful, memorable and fun events!

When you volunteer for an HVPTO event, HVPTO sends a log of all volunteers and their hours to the Valley Office. Students should enter the info on their School Service Points Log and then take it to the Valley office for staff sign – they will compare & confirm against the list that HVPTO sent in.
