DESCRIPTION:The next SBFC Speaker Series event “Left to Our Own Devices: Parenting Strategies for Healthy Device Management and Optimal Mental Health” with Dr. Don Grant will take place on May 17\, 2022 from 6:30 – 8 pm.\n\nTo register click HERE.\n\nAbout the Presenter: \nDr. Grant\, MA\, MFA\, DAC\, SUDCC IV\, is an internationally award-winning media psychologist\, published researcher\, Doctoral Addictions Counselor\, and educator with specific expertise in technology’s impact on mental health. He is President of the American Psychological Association’s Division 46 (The Society for Media Psychology & Technology)\, and Chair of both APA’s “Device Management & Intelligence” and “Strategic Planning” Committees. He is also Executive Director of Outpatient Services for Newport Healthcare\, which recently launched their new PHP/IOP adolescent treatment program under his leadership in Santa Monica\, California. \nDr. Grant designs\, presents\, and facilitates “Healthy Device Management” and “Good Digital Citizenship” treatment strategy and educational training workshops for clinicians\, educators\, parents\, and school communities. \nLast summer\, Dr. Grant was invited to join the APA Coalition for Psychology in Schools & Education\, which was commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control to create a series of adolescent psychology focused support manuals on behalf of the DASH funded APA Safe and Supportive Schools Primers Project. Don and his team completed the last of these manuals in October\, with the entire series to be distributed by the CDC to schools\, administrators\, and educators nationwide. \nDon’s current research includes investigations of potential effects of social media\, cyberbullying\, and device driven attachment bonds on adolescents\, teens\, young adults\, families\, and our culture/relationships-at-large.

DESCRIPTION:Please join HBCSD for “Drug Addiction – It’s All in Your Brain” to learn about the brain & drug addiction. \nMAY 12\, 2022 from 4:00 TO 5:00 PM ON ZOOM! \nThis program provides scientific information about the disease\, including the many harmful consequences of drug abuse. \nPresenter Victor DeNoble\, Ph.D.\, was hired by the Philip Morris Tobacco Company in the 1980’s to research and study the effects of nicotine on the brain and was later fired because of what his studies revealed. TK/K will be offered at our updated Hermosa View School reopening in August 2022. DESCRIPTION:The next SBFC Speaker Series event “Supporting Our Children During the COVID-19 Pandemic” with David J. Schonfeld will take place virtually on Ocotber 19\, 2021 from 6:30 – 8 pm.\n\nTo register click HERE.\n\nThis session will provide practical advice to parents and other caregivers on how to help our children cope with persistent adjustment difficulties and grief associated with the pandemic. Common adjustment difficulties that are most likely to be seen at this point in the pandemic and practical strategies to provide assistance and support will be reviewed. The distinction between grief and loss\, common during this pandemic\, and trauma will be discussed; free resources from the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement and the Coalition to Support Grieving Students to address these challenges will be highlighted. The session will underscore the need for self-care among adults. Time will be devoted to questions and discussion. Together\, we will consider how best to promote the recovery and continued adaptation of children and ourselves.
